Testosterone Cypionate: History, Chemistry And Pharmacology
Testosterone has a rich history in medical
and research textbooks. It started out in the latter, as many conventional
drugs and treatments do, before finding widespread use in the former. It was commonly
used to help treat diseases, which affected muscle mass and quality of life.
Namely, illnesses like HIV and cancer. It also found some use, particularly
more recently, in anti-aging treatments, and of course for hypogonadism.
However, in the middle of the 20th century,
athletes soon found out that the benefits these drugs provided could aid their
appearance and athletic capabilities. This was soon also discovered by
bodybuilders.
The chemical structure of exogenous testosterone is the same as that of testosterone, with the one exception being the attached Cypionate ester, which acts as a chemical delivery agent to control the rate at which the chemical, and how much of it at any time, is released into and processed by the body. This controls the rate at which its subsequent effects are experienced by the user. The latter is discussed in further detail below. But first, we look at the chemical processes that make these effects possible in the first place.
Mechanisms Of Action
Testosterone is classed in chemical and
medical circles as an “anabolic-androgenic” compound, firstly because of its
effects, discussed in more details below, and because of how these effects
occur. Namely, through the chemical binding to androgen receptors in the body
at specific sites and at certain cells. This happens at a rate dictated by the
ester, with longer esters causing storage of some of the chemical in fat cells
when administered. The binding to receptors then leads to a change in the normal
molecular signaling in these cells, in order to change up processes like
protein formation and metabolism.
The end result is a global change in
protein synthesis, a reduction in protein breakdown, nutrient absorption, and a
greater degree of nitrogen retention and red blood cell production.
These are not the only processes that occur either. Part of the chemical processing that the testosterone goes through is processing by enzymes like 5-alpha-reductase and aromatase, which convert some of the active testosterone into dihydrotestosterone and estrogen, respectively. This causes some additional effects of the drug that are discussed alongside its anabolics results below.
Discrepancies In Forms Of Exogenous Testosterone
As you may already know, Testosterone
Cypionate is not the only form of exogenous testosterone available on the
market. It’s arguably not even the most popular. There are a number of
different forms of testosterone. The main, and most common, ones are:
- Testosterone Propionate
- Testosterone Enanthate
- Testosterone Cypionate
- Testosterone Suspension
The chemical structure, and mechanisms of action, of all four are the same. The first two differ only in the length of their chemical esters, meaning their only practical difference is that they are released into the body and take affect at different rates. The final form is one that’s suspended in water or oil alone, meaning it has no such delivery agent attached, causing immediate release and effect, meaning that it will only last a few hours. Meanwhile, Testosterone Cypionate has an active life of around two weeks. While the former may sound ideal, it is worth mentioning that both the undesired effects and desired ones will occur over the same rapid timeframe. To give you a better idea, we’ll take a look at both such effects below.
Effects: The Good And The Bad
Like any drug, testosterone has its share of both positive and negative effects with use that must be weighed and balanced against each other by anyone looking to use it, especially for recreational or competitive purposes. Below, we look at both to give you a clear idea of how such use may affect you.
The Good
The beneficial effects of testosterone are
well publicized. They include:
- Higher rate and magnitude of lean mass growth and development, and subsequent increases in Trenton and power capacity
- Greater red blood cell count and higher work capacity
- Greater bone density
The Bad
Adverse effects associated with the use of
exogenous testosterone use, especially in recreational or competitive settings,
include:
- Cardiovascular issues like a buildup in LDL cholesterol, an enlarged heart, higher blood pressure and reduced flexibility of the blood vessel walls, which necessitates a heart-healthy diet and lifestyle.
- Estrogenic issues like bloating, increased fat accumulation, and the risk of developing gynecomastia in men, which is manageable with the use of aromatase inhibitors or SERMs.
- Suppression of endogenous testosterone manufacturing in men, which will persist for a time even after exogenous use has ceased, necessitating a Post Cycle Therapy regime to help manage this.
- Androgenic issues like oily skin and acne, and balding in predisposed individuals, which may be somewhat manageable with 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors.
Dosing And Administration
Because the uses for Testosterone Cypionate
vary, along with the individuals using them, so does the dosing. Variables to
consider would include gender, purpose of use, prior use of anabolics and
sensitivity to its effects.
Common doses for male users are between 200
to 500 milligrams per week for those who are relatively new to the use of
anabolics, and anywhere from 1000 to 2000 weekly for more advanced and
experienced users, with females advised to stay away from its use completely because
of potential virilizing effects, which can be drastic and permanent.
These doses would normally be distributed over once to twice weekly administrations done as intramuscular injections in popular sites like the lateral deltoid muscle at the side of the shoulder, or the gluteal muscles in the buttocks, with sites rotated to help prevent site soreness or infection.
Programs
Because of the relatively gradual and inefficient nature of Testosterone Cypionate 250, it is normally used during programs where the aim is gradual, or sometimes fast, lean mass and strength growth. These periods can last anywhere from 12 weeks to a year, and are normally combined with other anabolics, like those specified below.
Common Combinations
Common anabolics that accompany the use of
Testosterone Cypionate include: Trenbolone, Winstrol or Masteron. Meanwhile,
more rapid, if less efficient, programs may include anabolics like Boldenone,
Nandrolone, or Dianabol alongside the testosterone use.
